9/11 has it truly changed who we are? I would like to respond with affirmative yes, of course... But I don't know if honestly I can do that. In my school you could walk through the halls before 9/11 and then today and I'm afraid the only change you would notice by looking at us as a whole, a school, would be different students. There's still marker on the walls, trash cluttered o the ground, the students who are picked, and there predator.. The jocks and the neards... the cheerleader the genius... The people you would have to look at individually: I think some have forever been moved caring in there hearts the burdens of those who were killed, others you see who on the outside are rough while on the inside are desperately seeking reconciliation. Then there are those who you wonder if they even know what happened! People deal with tragedy differently. Some will strive to change the world, to look at the things that caused this and change them. While others will say that it didn't affect them why bother. 9/11 forever scared as a day of mourning.. perhaps todays teenagers don't take it serious enough don't fully understand the depth to it.. Or perhaps they understand all to well, as they carry the weight inside.. Look at different people and chances will you won't see how 9-11 affected them.. Look deeper not at the people but at there hearts and the pain for those people are there.. Tucked away

During this past school year what was your favorite song / singer or band, and why?"

Picking my favorite song during this past school year (my senior year) was a simple task. In late August, I attended a Lonestar concert with one of my good friends. While there, we both purchased their new cd, "I'm Already There". On the way home, we listened to the disc and one track -- more than the others -- really got to us. My friend, being the "macho" guy that he is, even started shedding some tears. The song I'm referring to is "Not a Day Goes By" by Lonestar. While I thought it was a magnificent song from the beginning, it meant even more to me when I lost one of my best friends in an automobile accident last November. All of the lyrics seemed to sum up exactly how I felt about my loss. Everything from "got a picture of you I carry in my heart; close my eyes to see you when the world gets dark" to "got a memory of you I carry i! n my soul; i wrap it close around me when the nights get cold" touched my heart. Now, in a few short days it will carry additional meaning. That friend that I went to the Lonestar concert with is leaving for Illinois because he joined the Navy. It may be up to four years until I see him again. Over all, "Not a Day Goes By" has struck a chord within my soul. And the fact that Richie McDonald (Lonestar's lead singer) is so passionate about his singing also helps.

What would be the best CHANGE at your school for the NEW YEAR?

The best change at my school would definitely be one of the things that Mark mentioned when he came to our school, Aylor Middle School, on 02/22/02. He suggested that teachers be given a 37% payraise. My parents are both teachers, and as much work as I see them do at home, I know they do a lot more at school. They deserve much more than they make, as do all other teachers. In my family alone, this suggested payraise would give us $38,850 more each year. My older brother and I are sure that we want to go to college, and right now, we could use a lot of that money to continue our education. Going to school every single weekday is tiring and, I must admit, sometimes boring. But if you've ever looked at a teacher and really seen them, you know how much they love their jobs. And as I know from my bank account, they don't just do it for the money. But don't you think they deserve it?

Well to be real honest with the "What would be the the best change for your school in the new year" question would mostly be for us teens not to be presured in to aanything we didint want to do like smoke or go to a party and drink. I would hope that every one not only the people at my school would want to sit down and pray first thing in the morning before the day stared. That's just what I think schould change in our schools.

I was at my grandmas house when i woke up the morning of september 11 and saw the television reports i thought it was a movie at first but then i realized that it was really happening. i couldn't believe it my country America the only free country in the world the strongest country in the world was being attacked from inside of itself by foreign terrorists. theses terrorists lived in our country they were living in florida for 4 years. when i found out that there are more terrorists in america i lost it how can there be terrorist training camps in one of our most beautiful places in america the rocky mountains. what is our country coming to. we have all this technology but we can't protect ourselves. what i think should be done is the country of afghanistan should be wiped completely off the face of the earth but in doing this we will wipe other innocent countries away too so i trust in our president that he will do the right thing and god will help him make his decisions about what to do. Mark and Dex hey dudes, hows it goin? grand.... anyways, I think one of the least favorite things I'll be facing is school itself... I'm going into grade nine at a private Christian school in Belleville, Ontario, and I live in Kingston, Ontario. All my friends aren't Christians, but at least they're going to the same school together! I have to go entirely on my own, make all new friends, have nobody except myself and my sister (that I don't get along with too well) at school. It's going to be really difficult...especially since I'm really struggling with this whole God thing...but I guess the best thing I'm facing this school year would also be the school itself...because it will help me get closer to God, and I know I need to. I guess, you could say that this school is going to be the best thing for me, although it's really going to make me bitter in the first few months since I'll have virtually no friends unless I get a super boost of confidence and make them. It's kind of like when your mom makes you eat something that tastes incredibly disgusting...but she knows it's good for you. So although this school is a particularly revolting idea to me, leaving my friends, leaving my comfort zone with God...I guess it's the best thing for me. Yes, school itself is definitely going to be the best and least favorite thing I'll be facing in the school year.

13 year-old Morgan Pressel played in last month's Ladies Pro Golf Tournament.  Young men are leaving high school and are being drafted to play in the National Basketball Association.  Should students be playing in pro leagues without college education?  What is the up and down side?

Answer 1.
It's great that there are some students who have the talent to compete in pro-leagues, however without the education they will be lost somewhere down the road. For example, let's say one of these students got hurt (God Forbid) and it was an injury bad enough to end their career as an athlete, unless they got a good education they wouldn't be able to get a good job. Also, (as in a case of the 13th year old) a downside would be, a maturity level. These students playing in pro leagues would have to have a certain level of maturity that would allow them to click with other athletes in that sport. in some cases this could be unhealthy or down right stressful for the student. Of course there are good sides to this, the student can earn money in playing in pro leagues and that would help them later if they did decide to go back to school, also starting so young they would be able to retire earlier. this of course is all how you want to look at it. ~ sun_angel_02@hotmail.com

Answer 2.
I do not believe that they should, for the main reason of if something happened. Say they decide to play pro and never take time to go to college, then they get hurt and are not able to continue a career in the sport, what now? If they do decide to play pro instead of going to college I guess an upside would be, that if they saved, that if something did happen they would be able to pay for college, instead of relying on loans and such things as that.

Last year 13 year-old Nathaniel Brazill of Lake Worth (FL) shot and killed a teacher  in the school. Should this young teen be tried as an adult or child? Are 13 year-olds responsible for their actions?

I think he should be tried as an adult because he shouldn't have killed the teacher because they are there to help and not for you to shoot at and we should all be responsible for our own actions. He should be able to know the difference between right and wrong at this age. Alicia Gilbert, Bailey Bridge Middle School, monte_trudi@hotmail.com

"Academics are a #1 priority in school.  Why are people not put before academics?
For example, if you can't do good in math,  it doesn't mean your stupid.  There are other things people might do well in!  What can our schools do to put people before academics?

I want a teacher to look at me and see the determination in my eyes. I want them to see that I may not be the best at what I do, but I put my heart into it. They have to realize that we work hard. School is not the only thing that we have to do, and it is surely not the only thing that is going to get us some where in life. schools can make sure I am doing as well as I can but they can also sometimes ask me what I would like to do. If I am good in drama, I would love to get on that stage and show the world what I can do. Working hard in a class and getting a "C" does not get you much recognition, but if you let me show you what else I can accomplish and get recognized for, then we just may get a little more confidence in ourselves.

"As we begin our third year on the web, you get to ask the question!  What is the 'question' that you would like to ask and have answered about school and life?"

I think that my question about school would be this: why is it that academics seem to be the number one priority in schools. Why don't we as a person come first? If I can't do math, that doesn't mean I am stupid, I just may have other talents that I am better at. And my question about life it this: If life is so grand why are we scared most of the time? And how do you know if your doing the right thing???? And most of all, how do we live only for God when it is so hard growing up as a teenager and we make huge mistakes? What if we just feel lost???

A letter came that said, "In school we don't need put downs and trash talk.
It's time to treat people the way they should be treated."
How should be treat each other in school? Be specific!"

I know that there are those certain people in every school that make there reason for coming to school to pick on someone. I have recently switched from St. Francis Xavier Catholic School to Jane Macon Middle School. Before this time I have never had anything to do with a public school. I believe that all people should be treated fairly in school. I know that the school can not stop the harsh treatment that these "less popular" people receive. There are many people that are made fun of and laughed at, but are you laughing? I have been in that situation before, I was the one being laughed at!! I know how it feels. We shouldn't use our learning time to make fun of others or put them down but to thank them. You may not know this now but the people that everyone laughs at and causes pain for are also the businessmen of tomorrow. These people that are laughed at everyday are the people that will probably most succeed. I believe that everyone should be treated fairly. surfer_gurl29@hotmail.com

"What are the biggest pressures people are dealing with at your school this year?"

2 Winners for this month!
I think the biggest thing that teens deal with is the pressures of being popular and to just fit in. I for one think that popularity has been blown way out of proportion. To fit in shouldn't be about whether or not you wear name brand clothes or whether or not you can become class president, it should be based on who you are. Many people has forgotten what it means to be a real friend...if only the world could look at people like God looks at people...it's the inside that counts, not the outward appearance! sun_angel_02@hotmail.com

School is a scary place. The biggest pressures on the minds of most kids in high school would have to be to do as well as they can, because your parents want you to go to college and be somebody. If your marks are low but you are trying your best there is always someone there who tells you that you can do better. One other thing people are worried about at school is all the shootings going on at all the school. Every teacher and student are thinking Could our school be next? If your not the top student in all your classes like your sister or brother is than your not good enough. Those are the kind of pressures going around at my school these days! luv_bug28@hotmail.com  --Michelle

When we were on our recent Kuala Lumpur trip our entry form to the country said:
"Drug Traffickers in Malaysia will be executed" Would that be proper law for US, Canada and other countries too?

The crime of drug trafficking to me is one of the most disgusting and heinous things in the world. Lives are being taken everyday, many of whom are teens, by drugs because it's a lucrative industry that some benefit from. Lives become a form of commodity, which these people trade for money. These drug traffickers know what they're doing and the implications of their actions and yet they still do it. They simply have no conscience and no more love for any other people except themselves. I believe we need to capitalize on that, on their selfishness. And the death penalty is a way to do it. This is not to say that the death penalty is mandatory or is the ONLY punitive measure that is available to judicial system. Just like theft and robbery are similar in its nature and yet have varying degrees of the severity of the punishment, likewise too in drug trafficking. Distinction would have to be made for peddlers of hard drugs and soft drugs, for first time offenders and repeat offenders. I believe that there is hope for drug traffickers, that they may be turned to see the error of their ways.  If they are repeat offenders and remain adamant and set in their ways, I believe that death would be an apt punishment because this would actually safeguard more lives of impressionable and many young people. The death penalty would also act as a deterrent to wanna-be traffickers. This would make them think twice about going into this seedy and destructive line of 'work'. I believe that all legal systems should aim to satisfy three things: To punish, to reform and to deter and I sincerely believe that the death penalty does that. Let's put a stop or at least retard the snuffing out of amazing potential in lives all over the world.  So the answer to question is a hearty YES.  It would be a proper law for the US, Canada and other countries of the world. "Who is your favorite teacher this year, and Why?"

My favorite teacher this year is without a doubt Ms. Carla Tucker. Let me start by saying that she was not my teacher. I am the 31 year old brother of a fetal alcohol syndrome child. My parents adopted Raymond in 1995. Raymond went to a special education class at Rucker-Stewart Elementary School in Gallatin, TN. At age 15 he had the mental capacity of about a five year old child. Ms. Carla Tucker, who no longer teaches, was his teacher. Actually she was more than a teacher she was his friend. Raymond was admitted to Vanderbilt Hospital on Friday Oct 13 of this year. Carla came to the hospital to visit on several occasions. She had a weekend trip planned for this past weekend the 27 - 30 of Oct. She refused to leave on her weekend away until she got to see Raymond and she cut her plans short so she could make it back in time to see him on Sunday evening (the 29th of Oct) before she went back to work on Monday. Because of his conditon this would be the last time she would see him alive. My brother died today. I keep thinking about Carla and the love she had for Raymond. She took time out of her own personal life to spend with a young man she used to teach. How many teachers would do that in today's society. I know of one. Her name is Ms. Carla Tucker. I am sure I will see her at the funeral as well and I will have to thank her just for being such a special person. Mark and Dex, this is my favorite teacher of the year.

Thank You for taking time to read this.

What I like about the school year so far is being with my friends. My friends help me with any problems and help me with anything I need help with. Friends are the best people in the world, especially mine. Another thing that I like is the atmosphere.  I always feel good about myself when I'm at school because I think of all the children that don't or cannot go to school and feel proud of myself for all of my accomplishments.  Michelle Parks, Ontario, Canada monkey4_8@yahoo.com

What do you think people fear at school?
What do they do about it?

What I think people fear most at school is the fear of what people think of them. I know I went through that but now it doesn't matter to me what anyone thinks of me.   I'm not sure what some people would do about it but I know I would try to fit in. Hang out with the "Cool People" if there is such thing. Some people would try to look and act like the others but you should always be yourself and not what others would like you to be.
Leaving you with this one phrase and hope you'll use it: Do stuff to please yourself and not others, people who try to change you to be like them are not your friends!

three reasons they should come to your school in 2000-2001??

Hey Mark and Dexter my name is Jen and I live in Hampstead NH.  I go to school in Derry NH though. My school has about over 3,000 people in it.  It is Pinkerton Academy. It's an all right school, but very crowded. There aren't very many reasons why I think you should come to my school, but that we need someone. It is a place of people with many problems although they don't show it. You would meet someone who dresses all preppy and you would think they would be the perfect goody goody, but on the inside they are just filled with rage and do everything that you know is wrong. Then you would meet someone who dresses like a punk and they are the nicest people you have ever met. But we all know that you can't judge people on appearance. I don't really have three reasons for you to come to my school, but just that there are a lot of people who suffer and they don't know what to do. If someone like you guys came along than things might change.   I just think that if you came to my school you guys could make a difference. You did for me when I went to your convention a few years back.

A 13 year-old shot his teacher at Lake Worth (FL) Middle School last month. What can you say to students of the world, to lay the guns down in school???

Dex and Mark...

Hey guys.. Okay to answer your question I think the only way kids will lay down guns if they learn to respect themselves and others!! Respect is where everything starts in life... (Well not everything) I think once kids respect themselves (cuz that's is how respect is.. we must respect our selves before we can respect others) Once we gain self respect which finding Jesus helps more than anything cuz than you find your worth... than we can learn to respect others... Here are the steps.... Respect God.. We find God and Jesus and they will help us to respect ourselves (even when that means having to let go and forgive ourselves) Than we must respect ourselves... (once we respect our selves we can move into the next step..) Respecting others... In order to get any where in this country I think we must start w/ respect... To me that is the only way guns/drugs/etc... will be laid down.... I think teachers need too stop teaching about evolution and that sorta stuff and start teaching about respect.. What is D.A.R.E. or any of those other classes that teach us about not doing violence/drugs/etc... if we don't even have respect for ourselves or others... We we lack respect for ourselves/others than we don't care....those classes do NO good if we don't have respect... Dex and Mark think u guys for caring baot people and helping (in my view) to change this place(the world) but teaching us that respect is a main key! U guys are so kewl! U have helped me to seek God through these hard times that I and so so so many other people have been going through! U guys have definitely made a difference!!!

"What have been the top three tunes at your school this year? What has been your favorite? Why?

I would have to say, the top 3 tunes at my school this year would have to be The Thong song, The Graduation song, and probably something by Britney spears, Christina Aguilera, or one of those groups. Those are all none Christian songs, but those have meant the most to my school. The Graduation song by vitamin C is a favorite, because at my school we are all so close to each other, such good friends. it doesn't matter what we look like, or our family background, but we all consider each other best friends. I know that none of us will forget each other as we grow up, and we will remember our public school days, and so Graduation has been one of our favorite songs. It describes our friendship, and we never want to forget it.

A personal favorite for me has been "Thank God I found you" By Mariah Carey, because I'm so thankful I found Jesus, and I'm so thankful I found my friends from my school. I've been going through a hard time lately, and I'm so thankful for my church.

Songs really mean something to me because I have a musical background. My friends say I think deep, and I write lots of poems, and so Songs are a way I can express myself. I really love Mariah Carey's songs. she's so inspirational and her songs really allow me to focus on good things, and how someday I'm going to rise above my problems.

   here's part of a song I wrote:

"Someday I'll find the strength inside to open up and fly To spread my wings and find my way oh yes, someday"

"Last month's PEOPLE Magazine headline said, "...Too Sexy?" The story was about the pressure teens can face in clothing choices! What is the 'what you wear' pressure at school? How do you get over it??

Well about this "what to wear" Well, in all honesty I feel this is a BIG issue at most schools. Everyone has there own style. You have the "preps" to "punk" to even "gothic". Everyone pressures everyone. Some people think that if you wear all black than that's a fashion statement. Some people feel if you skit is short than that's wrong. Also some people think that you should only wear top brand clothes like Gap or Tommy, etc. Everyone dresses the way they like to dress, that basically explains themselves. I don't go out and wear all black because I got pick on at school or maybe even some of my friends are telling me to wear all black "cause it's cool!" I wear what I wear cause it explains me, who i am. I wear colorful clothes, cause I am a colorful person!:-) You asked the question How do you get over the pressure at school on what to wear. Well, for me, honestly It was a big deal. I want to be in on the clothing, but I came to the realization that I am who I am. Why do i want to be like someone else and where the same stuff? But my advice, if I was to give it to anyone would be to look in the mirror, and have them ask themselves, is this really who I am. Do these clothes satisfy me?? IS it me? I had to do it, and it helped me A LOT. I don't want to be like everyone I want my own stlye and I think everyone should want there own style cause we are all different!. Well, that's what I think!!!

Dear Mark and Dex, First of all, I want to say thank you for coming to J.M.Morehead High School in Eden, North Carolina. Your speech really influenced me and I wished everyone could see what you and me see and that is NO COLOR IN PEOPLE. Second of all, clothing is a very big issue in my school. We have what every one calls "PREPS" and they wear some expensive clothing and its like if you can't wear or afford what they wear then you can't be there friends. I feel that is so stupid and ignorant. There are some that are "FREAKS" and they dress different and unusual but express their individuality and I think that is awesome. I feel that it doesn't matter where your clothes come from as long as you like what you are wearing and are comfortable with it. People shouldn't look at what you wear or the color of your skin but see the real person underneath all of that. People are not your true friends if the judge you on what you wear and the color of your skin. Well, thank you Mark and Dex for letting me express my feelings about this issue. You guys are great speakers and I enjoyed listening to you. Come back and see us real soon.

Hey Dex and Mark, I think that Elian Gonzalez should get to decide where he wants to stay... I know he's only 6 years old and that he doesn't know what's best for him (according to society any ways) but I mean he is 6 years old and he knows who he wants to be with. his dad or with his grandparents, they should let him decide!! He's been through so much already and taking him away from his dad (the person he wants to be with) would be like tearing him apart from the only family and the only way of life he knows which is so unfair to do to anyone no matter what the age! Nobody, if any, very few know what Elian Gonzalez is going through only he knows what it's like to go living every day with your mom and step dad dead and the government trying to tear you apart from the only family member that you have left (that u know) that's my opinion on the whole situation... ne ways dex and mark you're in my prayers constanatly.. luv ya both little homie in colorado.

The New Century is before us.  Mark and Dexter speak in public schools and want to come to your school. Their presentation is filled with motivation for life, and it's a non-religious presentation because of separation of church and state.  What would you want them to speak into the microphone before your whole school???

That would be awesome if Mark and Dex came to my school!!! if they came I would want them to speak about drugs because we have a big drug problem in my school. Probably the youngest smoker is in the 7th grade. and my school goes all the way up to high school so probably half the people do some kind of drugs. Also teen sex and pregnancy is becoming a big problem in my school.  If they came a lot of things would impact my school because there are many people who aren't saved. Everyone's just trying to grow up to quickly. In result, we have fights and drugs and violence.

On December 31 the 20th Century ends. This century gave us many great  leaders, politicians,
humanitarians, and sports superstars. Who was the greatest voice of the century?
What message or quote did they bring that made an impact?

The greatest voice of this century was Martin Luther King Jr. He was the the man who said it all, who said it how it should be. "I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character...I have a dream to thee" He was one of the principal leaders of the American civil rights movement and a prominent advocate of nonviolent protest. King's challenges to segregation and racial discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s helped convince many white Americans to support the cause of civil rights in the United States. Martin Luther King was the man. Because of him now today we can walk past another race with no fear from them and see them and us as the same equal persons or color.
C. Lewis lewisrw@albany.net

Dr.Martin Luther King because he saw the world as a different place then everybody else. he saw the world a being a place where our kids can grow, a place where you can go outside and not be afraid of being hurt by somebody or something. Mr. King was most famous for his racism revolts. he hated it. Racism was tyhe biggest thing happening in the country in the 50's. he went to amny different states trying to convince people that evrybody is the same no matter what color your skin is, what color your hair is, or if you might be bigger than somebody else. he mostly concentrated on the color part of racism. many blacks were getting discriminated becuase of there color. not being able to go in places to eat. having to sit in the back of the bus while the whites are up front. having to drink from a different watter fountain. his quote that many people that everybody still talk about is " i have a dream" the i have a dream speech was mostly based on saying that one day that everybody will like people for the inside. not because they might look different. i think that Martin Luther King is one of the most respected men to walk the earth.

the question, "What cost do drugs really bring to a persons life?"

Drugs are like uninvited guests who show up all at the wrong times and wrong places. They are like bad
car salesmen who you all the good things but don't even mention the bad. Drugs are like a bad sickness
killing off young ones who don't know what's coming to them. For something so bad how can anyone think
its good...this just ells you how messed up drugs make a person. Deana Jarvis, deana_jarvis@hotmail.com

"When you heard the news of the September 15, Fort Worth, Texas shootings,
what was your reaction? What can be done to stop the violence?"

This is April Dowling from Ellswoth High School. When I heard the news I thought that there was no need
for things to happen like that and really there is not a very good explanation to why it happened the only thing
that I can think of is that deep down inside the people who did the shooting were probably missing a very big
part of there life. In a way I fell that we can't totally stop the shooting but that we can help to minimze the
thoughts of doing it by reaching out for those in need and those who seem to be missing something that maybe
we might be able to fulfill the gap and help the reasons to kill or pull apart peoples lives minimize right in front
of our eyes. One thing that I have realized over the years that helps to fill my gap is the love of God he's always
there when you need him and he will not let you down or put you down as long as you believe.
Thank-you and may God bless you FirstAngel@acadia.net

"You've been given $1,000,000.00, sounds good doesn't it?   Break it down for us, be specific -
what would you do with $1,000,000.00?"

1 000 000.00?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" Thanks!!!!
I would give some money to charity. I would buy poor people lots of meals and I would give some money to my church. I would, yes I would, go for a shopping spree.....who wouldn't???? But I wouldn't spend all the money on myself. It's hard to say exactly what I would do with it....but I would definelty give a lot for good....because you reap what you sow!

"Where is your favorite place to go for Summer Break, and why?"

I think the best place to go over summer break is to an awesome Christian summer camp where you can get
closer to God and have and AWESOME time worshiping and playin games and getting dirty! Yes, FaHoLo, or any Christian summer camp, is a good place to be for a week or so over the summer! Especialy when you have Mark talking to ya at night until you can barely stay in your seat 'cause God is so powerful! Playin Freaky FootBall and messing around by the pool and the waterfront is awesome over the summer. The friends you make, the people you meet, the songs you learn, and most of all the relationship you develop with God over the week or month or how ever long you stay there!

"What was your favorite song this year, and why?"

My favorite song of the school year is actually one from last summer. That song would be "Iris"
by the Goo Goo Dolls. I think that the main reason that I like this song so much is
because it reminds me of myself so much. I have always felt as if i didn't want anyone to see the
REAL me for fear that they wouldn't LIKE ME FOR ME. Recently I realized that that isn't
really true. I have been through a lot in my life over the past year and it has made me realize
how important it is to be yourself regardless of what others think of you because of it.The
way that i see it, you have to be different in order to be noticed, just don't take it to the extremes!

"What are the lessons you have learned from the events in Littleton, Colorado?"

Back To Question of the Month Page

The lessons I have learned from the events in Littleton, Colorado are just because you don't fit in the "cool" group doesn't mean you have to make a hit list and kill everybody!!! If you aren't in the "cool" group the reason is because you don't wear what they like or act like they want you to act. Believe me I know they did the same thing to me!! Just ignore them and go on with your life. Also, bringing guns to school isn't cool like the "trench coat mathia" thought it was!!! Why would anyone do that??? Littleton was a horrible day, I just can't understand why they did that!! Just because they were mad at the cheerleaders and jocks!! Well, all i'm trying to say really is that if you don't fit in the "cool" group then ignore them instead of killing them!!!!
